Hambrecht & Quist has started coverage of AVNT as a BUY. Hambrecht & Quist said it has started coverage of AVANT! CORP with a buy rating based on its belief Avant! is "well positioned to sustain strong sales and earnings growth." Hambrecht & Quist said Avant! has design tools that are critical to the semiconductor industry as it focuses on chips using deep submicron geometries. Hambrecht & Quist said the company has grown through excellent customer acceptance of its internally developed tools as well as acquired design tools. The investment firm added that Avant!'s strong fundamentals are tempered somewhat by litigation risk. (Reuters 12:36 PM ET 03/27/97)
