I agree myths are wonderful for manipulating people- but I prefer people to, as much as possible, think for themselves. My point was not that myths cannot be used effectively on people, they are all too effective. My point is simply this- that if we do not KNOW a myth to be a myth, we give up something vital- our capacity to logically separate fantasy from reality. For example- many women want a Prince Charming. It does no harm to want one. It even may lend a certain charm to life to toy with the idea. It DOES do harm to believe he actually exists and is going to arrive at some point- because no man alive can measure up to that fantasy.
