NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 4, 1999-- Metromedia Fiber Network, Inc. (NASDAQ:MFNX - news) announced the recent launch of intracity dark fiber(a) networks in the metropolitan areas of Washington, D.C., Chicago and Dallas. With the launch of its networks in these three metropolitan areas, Metromedia Fiber Network now provides dark fiber infrastructure in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, Chicago and Dallas, five of the United States' 15 largest cities. In addition, the company is currently constructing networks in six additional US metropolitan areas and in Canada and Europe.

''The launch of our Washington, D.C., Chicago and Dallas dark fiber networks marks another important milestone in Metromedia Fiber Network's strategy to become the preferred provider of broadband communications infrastructure in the critical last mile,'' said Howard Finkelstein, president of Metromedia Fiber Network. ''We are pleased with the launch of Washington and Chicago, two markets that were part of our original plan, as well as Dallas, a newer addition to our market strategy. We continue to make progress in our current markets while at the same time expanding our vision to new markets in the US and into the international arena with the announcement of our entry into Canada and the addition of a number of major European cities as well as the build-out of an intercity ring throughout Germany.''

The Washington, D.C. Network

• (a) Editor Note: Dark fiber is a telecommunications industry term used to describe fiber-optic cable that has no signal or light passing through it. Metromedia Fiber Network leases individual dark fiber strands to organizations that attach their own transmission and receiving equipment to the fibers, allowing them the flexibility to deploy a wide range of advanced telecommunications technologies including broadband Internet Protocol (IP) networks, Synchronous Optical Networks (SONET), Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), Voice over IP, gigabit Ethernet and others. A growing number of equipment providers are producing commercial optical routers and switches that rely on the availability of dark fiber for their operation.
