Hello Kenneth,

I agree completely ... but this is also accounted for with applications like ICQ or AIM, and I expect, Microsoft Messenger. As a user of these services you list all of the various ways that you can be contacted - e-mail, VoIP, Phone, Chat, etc. - and the person that looks you up can then view these means. You even can list numerous numbers ... and soon have control over who can see each bit of information ...

So once I have set myself up, and listed all the various numbers and "access methods", I can then grant rights to people to see a certain subset of information about me. When you click on me in the application, you might see my e-mail address and that's all. If you click it your e-mail application is launched to send me a mail. When I get to know you better, I might grant you rights to see my VoIP identifier, or my cell phone number.

The key is not to make the primary index of the directory the phone number ... it's the person and their identity. These other "identitifers" are simply other indexes or attributes of the user ...

(i.e. what if I want to keep my phone number up to date as I travel? With all of the legacy systems around I might want to update it with my "current" phone number when I check into a hotel, etc.)

This is a huge area of development ... directory services. Things are moving very quickly in these developments ... you could look at ICQ, or ZCentral (http://www.zcentral.com) also ...
