The deal is `pure fantasy,' and not well thought out.
Ellison talks of Apple producing low cost, low powered network
computers. Mac users are looking forward to 500+ MHz computers
running the new operating system that Steve Jobs and his folks
are porting to the PowerPC. I don't think Mac users would have
much interest in an Apple that produced $750 Network computers.
Ellison is depending on brand loyalty to boot strap his
plans for Network Computers. Mac users are not brand loyal;
clones have nearly half the market. They need the power and
capability of Mac OS systems. No way Ellison is going to
convince Mac users to trade in their power computers for a
time sharing dumb terminal connected to an Oracle database.
An Ellison takeover would quickly end Apple, as Mac users
convert to WindowsNT with all the emotions Francis Gary
Powers must have had when he pulled the eject chord on his
fireball U-2 spy plane. Steve Jobs is right, `the whole thing
is bizarre.'
I didn't think anyone could be more annoying than
twister, but Ellison has my vote. I think that Ellison is
upset that Apple is putting out great products and stands a
good chance at succeeding under the leadership of Gil Amelio.
Ellison would rather join the boarding party for the Hale-Bopp
alien space craft, than greet Gil Amelio as a brother in the
exclusive computer fraternity of Chi Epsilon Omega(CEO).
