A string of Catholic priests have been brought to Concentration camps, mostly after false allegations of sexual abuse of children.(*) Similarly some catholic organizations were target people. A bishop was openly criticizing the Nazi's "Euthanasia Program" (systematic murder of retarded people) as what it was. There were mass demonstrations against the Nazis in 1936 when they decreed to remove the cruxifixes from the classrooms in a North-Western German region, that was then 95 per cent Roman catholic. These are the only mass demonstrations recorded, apart from what the Nazis organized. And the Nazis gave in. The "White Rose" cell of resistance was partly catholic, so to say catholic-led (but not clergy-led). But they were dreamers, could not have made a change above the word.
What else can be said pro-Catholic in respect of the Nazi era? Nothing. The Pope, being anti-communist, backed them to an extent. There was institutionalized anti-semitism before Nazism. That this was covered up to the post-war youth, is partly topic of "Das schreckliche Maedchen". The created cover was even used in anti-protestant propaganda (e.g. "Martin Luther has said to burn the Jews houses and shun the Jews." and "There was the corrupt 'Deutsche Christen' protestant church.") It took me some time to get rid of it.
The vatican most probably systematically helped 'certain' Nazis escape from allied forces after the war. The vatican had made a state contract with the Nazi-government, abdicating political activity of the church, its' clergy, and its' organizations. True, this contract had been in discussion with the Weimar republic since Versailles, and had up to 1933 been destroyed by Prussian influence ever since Bismarck had started his 'Kulturkampf'. But: I see no reason why this contract can be an excuse for silence against better knowledge (as it is asserted as a centerpiece of aforementioned cover-up activity) when, as is also asserted, the contract has been broken again and again by the Nazis. Also: the vaticanic diplomat who had the responsibility for that contract, was made Pope later. Wouldn't that contract's negative consequences constitute a major fault to hinder him from such career?
