Although I agree wholeheartedly with the substance of this posting, I think that when we are dealing with history--both past and current--we dare not rely on myth. (Consider the Camelot myth that has grown up around the Kennedy administration.)

My training in history sent me early to original source materials, asking myself all the time about the perspective of the writers (whose ox was being gored). A lot of myths fell apart and the subtleties of history emerged rapidly.

I have not gotten mixed up in the Kosovo thread because there is so little willingness to consider and understand the complexities of the history.
