In Canada you are required to lock up your guns. They must be registered by I believe end of 2001. The Government states that they won't confiscate guns. In the event of general civil disorder, I suspect that confiscation will become the rule. There are many that vow not to register.

Fact is, with the lock up rule, when something negative happens, like a Rotweiller attacking your household, or, a home invasion is in progress, you just cannot get your gun out fast enough. This means that to effectively protect your home, you would have to break the lock up law, the criminal has the distinct advantage and knows it when making a home invasion.

Recently I asked the RCMPolice what the likely outcome of a homeowner pepper spraying home invader(s) to immobilize them. Their answer was that the home owner would likely be charged for using a restricted weapon (the pepper spray). They rationalized that civilians using such weapons would not have the necessary expertise and would likely put themselves in danger by perhaps pepper spraying themselves. Same applies to guns they said, if you hit the invader then you would be likely charged for unlawful use of a firearm, manslaughter or ? Would be a decision of the attorney general's department. What a CROCK.

There are a significant number of people that would take the necessary action and let the following events take their course. Would be interesting to know of incidents where self defence in robbery attempts has been rewarded by a charge of unlawful use of a firearm or worse.
