Samsung Shipping Digital Set-Top Boxes to US

7/30/99 Ramping up their recent HDTV market efforts, Samsung Electronics Co. has begun exporting digital set-top boxes to the US for the consumer market.

The boxes, branded “Tantus” will retail for $2,000. Samsung began marketing an integrated HDTV set in the US in November 1998, but within the past month, has launched six more HDTV-ready sets—one other integrated set and five HDTV-ready monitors.

“We've designed the boxes to be as flexible as possible,” says Mark Knox, spokesman for Samsung. For output, the boxes will have Y-band component video for use with DTV sets, RGB component output for upscale analog systems and a 15-pin connector for use with a PC.

The set-tops “can talk with most DTV-ready products on the market,” Knox says.

The company hopes to sell 100,000 units worldwide in 1999.
