Laser,

I called the Arizona Department of Mines and Minerals today and asked them what information they had on the Santa Maria Mine and Mill. They told me that they have no mine or mill by that name on the books. They are also not aware of a Santa Maria Mining Company. They think that the property might be on the Santa Maria River in the vicinity of where AZ State 93 crosses it.

I asked if they were aware of any mills in the vicinity. They said that if I would consider a left-over Mom & Pop operation from 20 to 30 years ago to be a mill, then there might be a mill on the property. There are several old diggings in the vicinity.

They also told me that anybody with decent quartz could get silica contracts with Phelps Dodge. The ore in the Santa Maria area is quartz veins so it is possible that if they were to mine these veins they could sell quartz tails to PD.

They were not aware of any permits but said they would probably have to come from the BLM and that Santa Maria could have a 5 acre minimal disturbance type permit. Any leaching process would probably require more detailed BLM permitting and also an approved aquifer protection permit from the state of Arizona.
