I didn't say I was a nuclear physicist, I said that my degree was in Nuclear physics. You are asking me to recall course details from 1964 - 45 years ago!

I do remember that the encasing rods are kept raised with electrical power, and in the event of a power failure, the protecting rods automatically fall stopping all nuclear activity. The plants are dormant when the power fails.

I will try to find out more details and get back to you if this is satisfactory. Thanks for the question.
