Wed 28 Jul 99 News Release
Mr. Buzz McClung reports
The company has signed an agreement with PEI Innovations Inc. to develop
and market impact detection applications for the agricultural, food
processing and manufacturing industries. Under the agreement, GDI will make
an equity investment in PEI Innovations over the next several months for
the co-development of future impact detection products. PEI Innovations
also placed an initial order for 100 NOVAS hand-held computer terminals
from GDI's business unit, Global Data Granite Communications.
During a press conference at PEI Innovations new offices in Prince Edward
Island on Monday, July 26, 1999, PEI Premier Pat Binns, Solicitor General
Lawrence MacAuley and Development Minister Don MacKinnon were in attendance
to support this latest investment in PEI's emerging technology sector. PEI
Innovations recently launched Smart Spud technology, is the result of over
two years of research and development and is already enjoying worldwide
sales. The addition of Global Data Granite Communications' NOVAS product
will allow the impact data to be analyzed immediately and will help
complete the commercialization of the Smart Spud solution.
PEI Innovations' Smart Spud is being deployed across the agricultural
industry to simulate bruising and other trauma that results when fruits and
vegetables are harvested and shipped. Damage to the Atlantic Canada potato
crops in 1998 alone, resulted in an estimated $15.6-million in lost
revenues. Smart Spud is an affordable impact-recording device (spud) that
can be placed into agricultural shipments to monitor produce bruising and
mechanical damage during shipping and processing. The spud transmits the
collected data via a wireless transmitter to the NOVAS hand-held computer
to deliver real time viewing and recording and data analysis. PEI
Innovations is also leveraging its proprietary impact detection technology
to provide solutions for other industries. The first such product, the
Smart Bottle, an impact detection solution for the bottling industry, is
scheduled for widespread commercial availability in August, 1999.
"We selected the NOVAS product because its flexible touch screen interface
allowed us to develop an easy to use, menu-driven application", said Wayd
McNally, president of PEI Innovations Inc. "By incorporating the NOVAS into
Smart Spud we are able to bring a cost effective, state-of-the-art solution
that reduces losses from bruising and improves quality throughout the
multi-billion dollar agricultural industry in North America and Europe."
PEI Innovations Inc. provides custom designed technology for process and
quality improvements to the global agricultural, food processing and
manufacturing industries. PEI Innovations Inc. can be reached at
