GURUMAN,
The deal is that the broadcast TV industry is so enormous that no one company can truly dominate. There is no better way to see this than at the NAB Conference. It's in Las Vegas in April every year, and this year it's April 7-10.
When you're talking TV, Tek is strong in several areas.
- Production euipment such as video switchers, large and small routers for video and audio signals, and real-time video special effects systems. The Grass Valley division within VND takes care of these. Grass Valley will be introducing a brand new Digital Master Control Switcher this year. Grass Valley also handles the video conferencing products.
- Test and Measurement solutions for every facet of the broadcast process, including communications. No other vendor can touch the robustness of Tek's audio, video and TV communications Test line.
- Digital Video Storage Disks. The 'Profile' system is a market leader here. Tektronix, however, does not have a broadcast video server, where Hewlett-Packard does. This is where Tek needs to be aggressive and maintain leadership. Probably just a few months ahead of the competition in terms of fewest bugs and tighter integration into the studio and editing rooms. Very competitive environment.
- Editing systems from 'Lightworks'. Pulp Fiction, one of my favorite movies ever, was edited using a Lightworks system. If properly maintained and matured, this thing could generate some healthy revenue.
Note how isolated these markets are from the consumer. They are on the other side of the TV screen. Maybe a good slogan would "TV by Tek" instead of "Intel Inside". |
