Re: "You don't need insider information - look at Intel's recent behavior, rushing out a new high end processor and cutting prices across the board in a fairly significant change from recent plans. Unless they're worried about the VIA/CYRIX deal, Intel management seems to be pretty much convinced that the Athlon is serious competition."

This is standard for a culture that lives by the matto "only the paranoid survive". Intel's actions cannot be used to prove Athlon's availability. They must do whateven they can to cover the "whatif" possibilities. Who wouldn't?

Re: "Intel will probably have a gigahertz processor out in roughly the same time frame as AMD, but wait till they try to run systems with 40ns latency DRDRAM against 15ns latency SDRAM - even if they can catch up in megahertz, they're still in trouble. No wonder they're they're trying to move anything they can before Athlon arrives."

Intel is moving to larger and larger L2 on die. The latency issue will be less significant. I don't believe that AMD can match Intel in die size because of their poor process control. AMD will need to rely on off die L2 and they won't be able to match the speeds or latency.
