At least AMD isn't competing with Microsoft!

"NEW YORK, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) shares firmed in pre-open U.S. trade Thursday, edging up to $85.625 from $84.94 amid a report the software giant is plotting to offer low-cost, or even free, Internet access.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft is targeting America Online Inc's (NYSE:AOL - news) hold on the Internet-access business.

AOL shares, meanwhile, slipped to $85.125 from $87.44 ahead of Thursday's opening bell.

The newspaper reported Microsoft executives are laying plans to hasten the trend toward low-price, or even free, Internet access -- a move that could threaten AOL's position in a business that makes up about two-thirds of its revenues.

''We intend to be aggressive with access,'' Brad Chase, vice president of Microsoft's new consumer and commerce group told the paper."

IF Microsoft goes to lower price net access, it is going to be interesting to see if AOL "community members" will be willing to leave!
