Zeuspaul, I hope BryanB saw your discussion of the FAQ. (Bryan, you there?) I am sure that users can make contributions to it that SI personnel not might even think of. And especially, non-techie users. Techies often have no idea what might stump the non-techie; for them, the whole procedure is so "obvious" that they don't think it even needs explaining.
I know, I have a techie son. When I have computer problems, I hate to turn to him, because he always exclaims: "How can someone so intelligent be so stupid!!!!!!"
Well it's easy to be defeated by a mechanical object! <g>
Turning to another point, rating threads & posts.
On threads: still not in total agreement. A "special interest" thread, for example, might not have a broad appeal, and so would not attract a lot of posters. A ratings system would be of no use to a person looking for a thread on that particular "special interest", and might indeed lead him to conclude that there was no such thread.
On posts: Personally, as I think I said, I do favor a checkbox system that permits one to rate posts for oneself. But only for oneself. John Biddle and I went into that issue recently. If you did not read the exchange, here are the URLs. (The word "checkbox" will show up in red, so that you don't have to read these long posts in their entirety!)
