Cirruslvr,

<People could also be moving out this week after the quick run up last week when AMD's guy talked about stronger than expected flash.>

Actually, Athlon system availability situation may have something to do with the lack of strength. Paul breaking news on Gateway is a symptom of this problem.

Here is my take on the situation after doing a little bit of research. The motherboard makers have just now begun to ramp the volumes. Real volumes may not show up for a few more weeks. In the mean time, a very small set of vendors will be dumping the 500MHz inventory of Athlons to make space for higher speed grades. Given the imminent arrival of a new speed grade, the OEMs with limited allocation (compared to their forecasted needs) have no reason to carry the short lived 500MHz SKU. So, the real availability of Athlon systems is going to be weak until AMD introduces the 650MHz speed grade.

So, we are probably looking at a few more weeks (approximately one month) before we can see wide support for Athlon on store shelves. Which means another month of guessing on yields, speed bins, and all the usual concerns people have about AMD.

AMD could still be able to do a strong launch if they can get a lot of OEM partners to say they will be shipping product based on Athlon in the near future and that could give pretty good PR.

Chuck
