Re: MetaDogPile - aaaah maybe not.

Should go2net stick it out with its current name? Perhaps the subject for a new thread.

Preliminary thoughts: could outlast GOTO - worth the wait - no assurance that this me-too search engine with a slightly innovative business model can go the distance;

BUT up against the GO Network ... ? now that is a sticky problem. Owners of GO Network are an order of magnitude more mighty than go2net, Paul Allen and fancy new offices notwithstanding.

Yahoo! is a standout in this game of portal branding. Did they even think about it that much? (Of course there was no such thing as a portal when they started.) Would be interesting to hear the story. Anyway, there's a lesson in there - branding is key.

America Online doesn't sound like a very clever brand name but in the early days it staked them to the center of this online world and gave others little room to maneuver. The change to AOL also seemed well timed - after everyone had heard of it, and knew what AOL was.

PS I don't like the name GO Network, and think the stoplight looks silly and amateurish whether I see it on their site or while watching Wednesday night baseball on ESPN. Man, you'd think a big company could do better than that, but I guess the URL is short and that's good right? Yeah, until the day comes when domain names don't matter anymore and your name is "GO" with a stoplight. Blech, Yahoo! is way better than that. (Excite sounds like a Yahoo copycat but gets the job done for sure.)
