That artcile pointed out something I mentioned earlier: these things are dumb terminal replacements, not much else. There are some problems in pushing this new generation of dumb terminals:

1. Require re-wiring of network infrasture; to ethernet.
2. Require re-write of back-end applications.
3. Requires re-training of staff to use new applications.
4. Buying a lot of big back end iron to support them.
5. Limiting future variety and work that can be performed at the terminal side.
6. Until fault resilient networks are born this makes the network and back-end iron as a single point of failure. Users are down when the network or back end iron goes down.

From an architectural point of view corporations that choose this kind of technology are actually creating bottlenecks in their IT system. PC's (Intelligent clients) are more expensive that dumb terminals because they provide the rich functionality and variety needed to make users productive.

IMHO as always.
