Neocon, if one is going to use the word "conservative," I think it is useful to try to draw distinctions between different types of conservatives, as you have done.
But I don't feel you have gone far enough. Where do "Rockefeller Republicans," for example, fit in? Surely they aren't "paleos." Or are they simply "moderates," in your view? And if "right-wing populists" aren't "conservatives", where do you place them in that oh! so tiresome conservative/liberal dichotomy? And where do "moderates" fit? And Libertarians (with a capital L)? Are you prepared to dump the dichotomy?
Furthermore, while I do think it useful to make these distinctions, I would view them as "ideal types," that is, as "generic types." As such, they are unlikely to give us a full picture of the beliefs of any one specific individual.
And there is something else that puzzles me. Please do not take offense, but I wonder why you personally seem to find it necessary to stick a label on yourself, to the extent that you even use a moniker that identifies you in terms of your political "camp." Does it give you comfort to feel that you belong to -- or had your beginnings in -- a particular camp?
You see, I am just...
