CORPORATE CYBERSMEARS: Ex-cab driver, Wade Cook (now reportedly worth as much as $100 million) has filed suit against ten anonymous users who have allegedly posted slanderous messages on Yahoo bulletin board. While Yahoo is not a defendant, a subpoena may soon demand Yahoo to hand over the names and identities of the "anonymous ten" who have spread rumors against Wade Cook Financial. While online privacy is under attack from many fronts, Wade Cook Financial is not pleased with the privacy Yahoo provides its users. COPRORATE CYBERSMEARS: Shoney's Inc., a Nashville-based restaurant chain, is jumping on the John Doe wagon and has filed suit against three people who posted statements on a Yahoo! message board that reportedly hurt the company. Now the company only has to figure out who it sued. To this end, it has sent a subpoena Yahoo! to identify the authors of the postings to the Yahoo! message boards. "It is not our intention to prohibit criticism or personal opinion about the company, but we have an obligation to protect confidential and proprietary information about Shoney's Inc. which has appeared on the Yahoo! message board," said Betty J. Marshall, Shoney's senior vice president of corporate communications. Such incidents are prompting the SEC to beef up its enforcement resources to cope with the growing problem of securities fraud on the Internet. tennessean.com
