I feel that I must disagree with your assertion that this type of thing results in less crime. First, I doubt that many people involved in violent crime devote much forethought to it. And secondly, I doubt that a large enough proportion of store owners would both buy a gun and also take the risk to draw it on a theif for any deterrent effect to be felt. Just some thoughts.
