Interesting to see that we're getting attention as far away as DC. It wasn't 4 days of continuous rain, though, closer to 2 weeks, and it's still coming down. I am not among the millions affected, though people living not far away are. It is an unusually heavy rainy season, but the damage and deaths are less a result of the rain - a cyclic natural phenomenon - as they are of the huge rash haphazard and substandard construction, especially around the periphery of Manila. The disaster in the subdivision in Antipolo did not surprise me; I'm more surprised that it hasn't happened until now. Houses are simply being built where they should not be, and profit is being maximized by using hopelessly slipshod methods in preparing the sites. Of course, when the disasters happen the developers are nowhere to be found.
