1. Is JNPR's product prioperity? Proprietary? In short, the internal switching and mapping algorithms are proprietary, while the outside interfaces are "standard".
2. How is JNPR's pricing compare to the big boys? Nobody knows yet because there are no directly competing products from the "big boys." However, at around $500k per switch, there is room for negotiated discount arrangements with large customers.
3. How hard is it for JNPR's competitor to catch up? Very difficult, IMO. A year from now, we'll see a few directly competing products. By then JNPR should be firmly in place at most tier-1 ISPs.
4. If JNPR's product is so good, so high capacity, will there be a continuing demand? (the BEST drug is a drug that a patient has to take indefintely...) By far, your best insight. My own opinion is that the market is capped at a finite number of terabit routers. After all there are a finite number of COs. The challenge for JNPR is to broaden the product line to reach into lower density locations. However, this strategy would confront CSCO directly, resulting in a blood bath. Of course, we have a year to worry about it. |
