Dan, it is true that sdram can show latency advantages over drdram when the sdram has low cas latency. However, a funny thing has happened. The lowest latencies for either sdram or drdram can only be achieved at high yield on 0.18u technology. Now the dram makers have pretty much given up on drdram at less than full speed because the PC makers said they didn't want them (someone will eat the ones already built).

So dram makers are mostly using their still scarse 0.18u capacity for drdram because the prices are higher. For earlier technologies they are cranking out PC100 at CL2 and PC133 at CL3 since they are easily achieveable at high yield. Therefore the drdrams which will be available this fall will have better latency than the sdrams which are available this fall. (Of course it will be due to 0.18u vs 0.2u technology.) So when Intel announces their benchmarks they will show drdram as being faster. The real fine print might show cas latency but you can be sure that the press will never report it.

Thus, Intel and Rambus pin a kick me sign on the back of the dram vendors. And this is one reason that I've become a Rambus investor recently.
