Actually, frontrunning a rec. is illegal. I think it happens less often than some on SI suspect, but still, obviously, a lot more than it should. Conventional wisdom is the SEC has gotten more aggressive about investigating suspicious buys and sells before big brokerage upgrades and downgrades, but I don't know how you would measure this.

Incidentally, EBAY's strength may be due to people buying (or covering shorts) ahead of its analyst day on Monday. It is hard to imagine what they could say that would outweigh the site continuing to go down, but I'm not brave enough to short the bounce.
