<<RS/6000 is an AIX base server. IBM does not have
any FC adapter or FC switches. The
display from your link is strange. It led me to
believe that RS/6000 can connect to FC switch also.>>

KJ,
I couldn't stop thinking about IBM and FC.
So today I've been working the web and the phone
and have come up with a couple things.

here's the IBM FC products/pricing page:
direct.boulder.ibm.com

here's a gift from someone in IBM sales I spoke with,
I like the <<IBM INTERNAL USE ONLY>> stuff <g>.
I was told that the switch has been available (as stated in the document)
since March '96 and that it is not
an OEM (or it would say so). I find all of this
pretty baffling. KJ, All what do you make of this?

And I've still got IBM/Ancor on the brain.
And I do enjoy FC sleuthing, I'm meeting Andy Grove
for lunch tomorrow <g>

(it's long, and must be continued on next post...)

*-------------------------------------------------------------------*
The IBM 7319 Model 110 Fibre Channel Switch 16/1063 and IBM
Fibre Channel Adapter/1063 provide a high-performance implementation
of the ANSI Fibre Channel Standard, supporting high-speed, 1 Gbps
data transfers among selected RISC System/6000 (R) and RISC
System/6000 Scalable POWERparallel (TM) (SP (TM)) systems.
The FIBRE CHANNEL SWITCH 16/1063 is a high-performance serial
optical fabric, supporting a link rate of 1063 Mbps. Using
high-speed data paths and a low-latency control method, this channel
switch enables high-speed data transfers between RS/6000 (TM) and
RS/6000 SP systems equipped with Fibre Channel Adapter/1063 adapters,
and other systems, subsystems (devices), or fabrics supporting the
Fibre Channel Standard protocol. The switch supports cabling
distances up to 500 meters (.31 miles) with a 50 micron fiber optic
cable, using shortwave multimode optics.

DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 2

The FIBRE CHANNEL ADAPTER/1063 is a Type 5 Micro Channel (R)
Adapter designed to attach to selected RS/6000 and RS/6000 SP Micro
Channel systems. The Fibre Channel Adapter/1063 supports link rates
of 1063 Mbps. The adapter and its Optics Daughter Card provide a
high-performance optical connection designed to meet requirements of
the ANSI Fibre Channel Standard -- the Fibre Channel Physical and
Signaling Interface (FC-PH) ANSI X3.230 -- 1994, and the Fibre
Channel Systems Initiative IP Profile (FCSI -- 202, Revision 3.0).
The adapter and its device drivers support the IP (Internet
protocol), including TCP/IP, UDP (user datagram protocol), and raw
sockets.

FEATURE MATRICES
The following feature availability matrices use the letter "A" to
indicate features that are available and orderable on the specified
models; "S" indicates a feature that is supported on the new model
during a model conversion. These features work on the new model;
however, additional quantities of the features cannot be ordered on
the new model; they can only be removed. An "N" indicates that the
feature is not supported on the new model and must be removed during
the model conversion. As additional features are announced,
supported, or withdrawn, these lists will be updated. Check with
your IBM representative for additional information.
