Re: Guy in the office next to me asked as soon as he got in if Mac has a chance at Aaron's record (755). I'm sure he'll get back over to the AL, with the DH, when his legs have had it playing first. Even with that, I think it's maybe, big maybe, that he catches Aaron. I wouldn't bet on it. What do you think? I'd bet on Griffey ahead of Mac.

The sports concensus in St. Louis is that McGwire probably won't break Aaron's record - he simply missed out on too much playing time when he was injured earlier in his career. He's 35 (I think) right now, so he'd need five more 50 home-run seasons (he's working on his fourth consecutive 50 HR season this year) to break the record if he were to retire at 40, which would be incredible. It was reported on KMOX (the Cards radio network) that McGwire thinks Griffey is the one to break Aaron's record, since he's six or so years younger (assuming he stays healthy, too).

As far as McGwire moving back to the AL, he might. He says he likes it in St. Louis, but he's got to be frustrated to be working so hard for a mediocre team (the pitching is horrible). It would really be a blow to this town if he left, especially after losing the Blues' Brett Hull recently to Dallas.
