If we say "x, the unknown" is redundant- we probably mean ["x" being defined as a variable already (and variables being unknown)] the "unknown" is superfluously repetitious OR we could say it is repetitive- but I do not think it is very good form to say both. Unless of course the person who said that was merely making a joke KNOWING what he said was redundant- which seems to have been the case.
