The 87 crash, was it preceded by a sharp change in value of the yen vs the $?

That is my memory. The money left town as the dollar declined. The Fed had to raise rates to get it back and then bam. But of course my memory isn't as sharp as it could be.

There was of course the incredible speculation in real estate, the inflated value syndrome, and the borrowing based upon those inflated values, and the Reagan deficit.

All we seem to have done is cycle up to a higher level of expectation in the last few years. This time I think we have to worry about consumer debt and the end of the business cycle. I know at the local level government continues to run deficit after deficit here, we never brought our sales tax rates down to pre-87 levels. If New York gets hit with a recession WATCH OUT Orange County!
