EBay blamed the previous outage on custom database software from Sun, but the web site itself uses Microsoft IIS/3.0. netcraft.com This notice about the outage makes it sound like the initial problem were hardware and not software failures on the web servers themselves: beta.siliconinvestor.com "A preliminary evaluation suggests that there hardware failures on its server. Those hardware components were immediately identified and replaced, and the system was rebooted. At the time of the rebooting, the primary and the backup databases were up and functional. However, we then encountered network anomalies that have prevented access to the site."
