Business Week Fluff: AMD's NEW "DREAM" CHIP Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices is set to unveil a microprocessor that could make or break the company. The Aug. 9 rollout of the Athlon chip signals AMD's push to move into pricier, more profitable PCs selling for $1,300 to $2,000. Until now, AMD's popular K6 chip has been relegated to cheap PCs. So, despite record unit shipments, AMD has suffered as rival Intel has pushed down prices at the low end. AMD says the Athlon runs 5% to 40% faster than Intel's Pentium III but will cost about 25% less. "It's a dream chip," crows AMD chief W. "Jerry" Sanders III. Dozens of PC makers, including IBM and Compaq, have signed on to use the chip in PCs that will hit the market in September.
