Table of Contents or Indexes are a pretty way of presenting manually-massaged global search results... can most of this be accomplished automatically?

If I had to choose between a labor intensive filing system and a good full feature search engine I would chose the full feature search...a lot less labor<g>

Yes a lot of it can be accomplished automatically with a search engine.

However I do believe that both concepts have their strengths. One does not replace the other. A Table of Contents/Index/Message Filing System would compliment a search engine.

One might consider the two concepts analogous to the Windows help systems. You can do a complete search for a word in the help system. Or help is often available in a structured format..ie a list of commands and their functions. I make use of both.

For example: If someone wanted to learn how to italicize a post..the search engine might return 100 posts. A public folder created to help users post might contain a link to three or four posts that seem to have the best description of how to post with italics.

Putting lists of posts together is something that is done often at SI. Someone will research a thread and put the links in a message. It is as you say a 'massaged' list. It can take a lot of time. It is usually an individual effort. It most likely has a bias..as do many posts. It is up to the reader to discern the bias.

Faciliting functions that are already done by members makes sense to me.

It is easier to organize information in a folder. One can build information over time. An option for several people to work together on a concept could make for some quality product..and of course some junk.
