positive news for ptsc: Japan Handheld, Smart Phone Sales To Skyrocket
July 29, 1999 - Handheld sales in Japan increased more than 24 percent last year and that's just the beginning of the sales boom for Net devices, according to a study by International Data Corporation (IDC).
The study indicated that slightly more than 1.4 million handhelds were shipping in Japan last year, a 24.3 percent increase over the previous year. However, expected economic recovery and high consumer demand should lead to annual growth of 40 percent in the next several years, the study says. That will lead to sales of almost 10 million units in 2003. Demand for handhelds should increase dramatically in both the enterprise and consumer markets, according to the study.
The study also predicts that smart phones will boom in Japan, with sales of 2.4 million units in 2001. The study also predicted that smart phone sales would double this year, with a projected 323,000 units sold.
"In the not too distant past, there were only a handful of vendors offering compelling devices," said Kevin Williams, market analyst who covers mobile technologies for IDC Japan. "Now, a variety of platforms running on a plethora of devices are available, and prices are starting to fall." |
