I think that going to heaven and being with your boy is a happy ending. The movie was about (IMO) him fighting the process of going to the next level (death), but when he lets go he is at peace and with his loved ones.

Agree that it is an intense story and disturbing, but the underlying message is that there isn't anything to fear and all ends up good.
