PHLX OPTIONS VOLUME CONTINUES RECORD GROWTH

PHILADELPHIA, August 4, 1999 - - The Philadelphia Stock Exchange (PHLX) announced today
that year-to-date volume in PHLX's 930 equity options increased 30% to reach a record 25,592,048
contracts, surpassing the industry?s percentage growth of 24% over the same period last year. In
addition, equity options volume for the month of July, 1999 reached 3,314,512 contracts traded, an
increase of 10% over June, 1999 when 3,018,155 contracts changed hands.

PHLX equity volume through the first seven months of 1999 increased to 976,572,468 shares
traded, an increase of approximately 25% in comparison to the same time period last year when
782,024,446 shares changed hands. In addition, equity volume for the month of June, 1999 reached
108,023,727 shares, an increase of 6% in comparison to the same month last year when
102,038,200 shares traded. The PHLX trades over 2600 equity issues.

Volume in PHLX's sectors index options through the month of July increased to 1,803,189 contracts
traded. Sectors index options volume for the month of July reached 211,732 contracts traded. In
addition, year-to-date volume in PHLX's Internet Sector (DOT), the industry's leading Internet index,
continues to rise with 184,000 contracts traded.

Volume in PHLX's customized and standardized currency options for the month of July, 1999
reached 90,647contracts traded ($4.1 billion in underlying value), a 6% increase over June's volume
when 85,818 contracts traded.
