Yes there are many germane issues tackled on this topic. Far in depther than I had thought there was depth on the sujet out there.

frinstance this:

Is rendering or the transport the issue here? (Score:1)

We had NeWS which used DPS as base, rendered by X. Java is kin to DPS, and XML is becoming second cousin. So is the issue Graphics or the Transport?

It appears to me that Transport should be fixed first, since we can go back to NeWS in a rather painless way, and get a better transport to begin with. And then all of X can
slowly be replaced by NeWS and we'd be ahead where we'd have been in 1987 if Gosling had his way instead of MIT and DEC.

Probably not even worth $ 0.02 but there it is....

So there were others who understood the X problem and what could be done about it and what X was good and bad for. Utlimately there is a lot of stuff it does that is unecessary. Although people say it is a client server architecture and that is good, it is bad CS architecture. Extremely high bandwidth for that sort of thing. One respondent even went as far as to say that the client or app side control of the window manager was good. Good for creating conflicts perhaps. But it does not make it better at CS nor does it make it better at remote connectivity as was suggested. Remote stuff was built in and it could have been built into windows too but that was never thought of.

There are better things to do. Better ways to run a WM than X. That much should be obvious. Just like there area far better keyboard layouts than the one lever IBM 102 Qwerty layout. when is that monstrosity going to be replaced? The soonner the better for everybody's carpal tunnels. Did you ever notice that clarinet players and piano players rarely complain about carpal tunnel? a bas le 101!
