Uncle Frank and Justin: I have had PacBell DSL at home for a couple of months now; when the tech came up from Pleasanton to install, he tested it out, initially, at a blazing 3.5M rate; it settled down to 1.5 to 2.0M and appears to function at that range fairly consistently.
I'm about 1700 feet from the switching station, and I believe that has a positive effect on performance.
However, the service has been erratic; net traffic jams cause the system to run at a crawl; when I contact tech support, they usually have some problem with backbone, and blame IBM.
Anyway, when the system is running, it's a beautiful thing; the only limitation of speed is how fast you can hit the key to move on.
I believe it is worth the $39 + ISP charge/month and have recommended it to friends here in Sonoma County with the proviso that they have a
56K ISP backup provider, especially if trading on the net.
Regards,
James
