It's also about real politik
D,
Well, that's what I alluding to without resorting to what I've always felt was probably an over-used cliche. (Most people, not necessarily yourself, use the term without really understanding what lies behind it)
Taiwan is scrambling for friends. Their locking in deals with the French is an inroad to finding European support for their case with Bejing (since Airbus aircraft, I believe, incorporate parts from a number of consortium members).
And, it is important for America to try to maintain peace with China for reasons of trade.
Makes me wonder why the US has taken so long to make overtures to India (which used to enjoy support from Moscow). Their economy is larger than China's, I believe, as is that of Brazil.
One of the dangers of becoming overly involved in trade with a totalitarian regime is that your foreign policy decisions are often held hostage to your own commercial concerns. Like making a deal with the devil, the cost oftens proves substantial for the limited and temporary reward.
