The invention of the atomic bomb was one of the best things that happened in this century. It ended the war in Japan with far less casualties than were otherwise anticipated, and caused a stalemate between the Warsaw Pact and Nato that probably prevented World War III in, oh, about 1970 or so. We make too much out of the effect of the bombs, too, which was primarily psychological, since the incendiary bombs used on Dresden and Tokyo were more destructive. It was the fact that we could deliver so much with so little that brought everyone up short. Finally, the creation of weapons of mass destruction was inevitable anyway, and we probably have more to fear from anthrax bombs than plutonium bombs.....
