Yeah, I know, so have I.
The way I look at is:
1) He was editing bookmarks, and now wants to undelete some. Since they're all held in one file, unless he has another copy somewhere else, he's screwed.
2) The file was lost. Netscape does lose the bookmark file every once in a while, so having it backed up (as well as the entire profile) is a very wise idea. Assuming his profile is still fine (since he can start Netscape without problems.) and if the bookmark file is either empty or corrupted, without an older copy somewhere, he's screwed.
Your suggestion to re-create a new profile is a good one, IF the old one was deleted. Often times it will find the older settings. I hope that's the case. However, I have a feeling it falls under scenario 1.
I pretty much do the same as you when re-installing OS's. For certain systems, all critical settings, driver packages, and user profiles can be held on a zip disk. So after the OS is re-installed, I can grab information on the disk and within a few minutes, it's set to go. DI is another way to go, but isn't feasible in some instances.
