Keeping an account equity of at least 50% seems like a good idea if you enjoy sleeping well at night. I've always heard that few can time the market well ("Its time in the market not timing the market"). So, it seems to me like timing individual stocks rather than indexes like QQQ should be easier. It appears that your recent short sales on margin have worked out well, but have you been able to go long and short QQQ with much success over the long haul? Sounds like you trade a fair amount and the approach you suggest is a lot less risky than trading puts and calls. Regarding the level of margin, it seems like a good rule of thumb is to try to keep an equity position of at least 75%.
