You both are right on this one. FT has a point. But he's an optimist. I give it 200 years before we truly hold the decoder ring to our firmware. In the meantime, we are at risk. We face a real threat of urbanizing the whole planet and/or precipitating such a global economic how-do-you-do that the means for maintaining large-scale affluence (the foundation for technical advancement) capsize. If that happens, the digging-out will be as long and painful as the medieval rehearsal for the Dark Ages. I don't envy folks like Greenspan - betcha they have a real sense of responsibility toward everybody's grandkids.
