pdQ and Thinphone each use the same data channel. The basic IS-95 channel is 14.4k. the pdQ is obvious in that it has a web browser and can surf the net along wiht email.

the thinphone has features in it which have not been borught out yet due to the network not being there. The thinphone has the Wk browser in it (Unwired planet software) along with a packet modem software stck (TCP/IP stack) that can be accessed by using a data cable between your laptop and the thinphone. Once the data service is turned on, then you may be able to sign on to an ISP using this. Depends on how much the carriers open up the data service.

To check this out, hit the voice mail button then the net button on the thinphone. You will get a network attempt, but since the phone has not been activated for this, you will get a network failure. Also in the sytem features is a menu item marked data. Hitting that locks the phone into data mode for packet only operation.

Future versions of both pdQ and thinphone can do 86k data rates if they are upgraded to the MSM3000 ASIC and the carrier supports IS-95B. If they were upgraded with HDR hardware, then they can each do 1-2Mbps Max rate.
