I never claimed the US government was above reproach. And as disgraceful as incidents like Ruby Ridge are, I don't think they are representative of the US gov- although with the current administration (which obliged nobody to so much as step down for RR) it's hard to be certain.

I think you err with regard to those who incurred HUD's ire. I believe HUD called off its dogs, after intimidating people with their threats of law suits. Something to do with something called the Bill of Rights.
