I find it very painful to watch two highly intelligent people who have been valuable friends to me and who could so easily be good friends to each other start to tear at each other's throats. This was not spirited debate, as Jim characterized it; this exchange had devolved into the unforgettable and unforgivable.

I hope with all my heart that they can put this exchange behind them as they seem to have a great deal to offer to each other and to the thread at large. Both men are far more complex and thoughtful than their recent postings suggest and I hate to watch them wasting their time and energies in viciousness, especially as they are so palpably missing each other's points. So I gave up on PMs and read the riot act in public. We'll now see if they can back off and engage in the reasoned discourse of which they are both quite capable.
