Linux comes to the Ultra SPARC platform....
Caldera Systems Open Sources OpenLinux 2.2 for Sun Microsystems' UltraSPARC-Based Systems Business Editors & High-Tech Writers LinuxWorld 99 OREM, Utah--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 9, 1999-- New Technology will be Contributed Back to Linux Industry,Demonstrated at Linuxworld and Can be Downloaded from www.openlinux.org Caldera Systems, Inc. today announced that its port of OpenLinux 2.2 for Sun's SPARC(TM) and UltraSPARC(TM)-based platforms is now available for download from www.openlinux.org.
Caldera Systems ported OpenLinux to Sun's industry-leading Ultra(TM) systems with the help of key Caldera Systems engineers in Erlangen, Germany, the University of Erlangen and Sun Microsystems Inc. This effort clearly demonstrates that Caldera's self-hosted method of porting Linux (matching source and binaries) can easily produce OpenLinux on several different platforms. OpenLinux 2.2 also works with Sun's older SPARC-based platforms.
Sun's range of UltraSPARC-based systems offers the reliability, availability and scalability that today's power users need, and has set new standards in enterprise computing. Caldera Systems, Inc. and Sun Microsystems have been working together for several months to make their complementary technologies freely available to all in the Linux community and industry. The two companies will continue to work together to address the needs of their common customer base.
"We saw a tremendous groundswell of interest in our OpenLinux/UltraSPARC demonstration at LinuxWorld in March," said Ransom Love, CEO of Caldera Systems, Inc. "We have long thought that Sun's hardware expertise and our OpenLinux technology would be a great fit -- and of great benefit to both companies' customers. It provides the speed and stability of OpenLinux with the power and reliability of Sun's UltraSPARC-based hardware. It makes choosing Linux for Business that much easier." "We are excited to see the results of our collaboration with Caldera and to be able to demonstrate yet another open source choice for developers and users alike," said Ann Wettersten, senior director of Systems and Software Marketing for Computer Systems at Sun Microsystems, Inc. "The combination of OpenLinux 2.2 with the reliability and performance of Sun's 64-bit Ultra Workstations and Enterprise Servers provides users with a powerful and cost-effective Linux solution." OpenLinux 2.2 for UltraSPARC will be demonstrated at LinuxWorld in San Jose, California, August 10-12, in both the Caldera Systems, Inc. (No. 413) and Sun Microsystems, Inc. (No. 932) booths.
