Wind River Systems, TouchStar Technologies Increase Performance of Mobile Computing Systems for Enterprise Field Operatives
Customers Also Have Option of Java Technology-Based Information Systems
ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 9, 1999-- Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND - news), the leader in embedded development software and services for the post-PC era, and mobile computing pioneer TouchStar Technologies announced today that TouchStar will use Wind River's industry-leading embedded technology in its advanced TouchPC Eagle(TM) line of handheld mobile computing devices. This agreement will give TouchStar customers, typically leaders in the distribution, transportation and field service markets, a cost-effective, reliable mobile computing solution for field personnel running mission critical applications, such as product delivery and service.
With increasingly powerful microprocessors available at lower prices, organizations with a large field force can offer their employees Internet-enabled devices built by firms such as TouchStar to retrieve and update information online while employees are out in the field. The TouchPC Eagle with Wind River's Tornado(TM) development tools and the reliable VxWorks© real time operating system (RTOS) will enable TouchStar to develop mission-critical mobile computing applications more quickly and to run them in real time. The VxWorks RTOS will also increase performance, flexibility and reliability of these mobile systems.
In addition, some TouchPC Eagle models will run Wind River's solution for embedded Java(TM) technology -- which is already used in over 200 Java technology-based embedded applications -- for TouchStar customers looking for the cross-platform Java technology option. Wind River's development software for Java technology is optimized for embedding Java code. It includes the Tornado development tools; the VxWorks operating system, upon which the Java code resides; and the small-footprint Personal JWorks(TM) Java technology Virtual Machine (VM) which allows applications to combine the real-time behavior of the VxWorks operating system with the advantages of Java technology.
