(BSNS WIRE) Dell Unleashes Video Creation and Storage Solutions for Dell
Dell Unleashes Video Creation and Storage Solutions for Dell Precision
WorkStations; Special Bundles Meet Needs of Digital Content Creation,
Data-Intensive Customers

Business Editors & High-Tech Writers
SIGGRAPH 99

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 9, 1999--Dell Computer
Corporation (Nasdaq:DELL), the world's leading direct computer systems
company, today introduced the first Dell Precision(tm) WorkStation
video creation and storage solutions designed for professionals in the
U.S. digital content creation (DCC) market.
Dell representatives will demonstrate these solutions to DCC
customers at booth 1159 of the Siggraph '99 trade show here this week.
"As the entertainment industry migrates from film to digital
media, workstation customers are developing two vital needs:
specialized tools for video creation, and storage devices with plenty
of room for expansion," said Linda Hargrove, vice president, Americas,
Dell Precision WorkStations. "Dell is responding to the needs of this
market by offering workstation customers professional video-capture
technologies and a range of scalable, UNIX-compatible storage
solutions at extremely reasonable price points."
Customers in the United States can now order a Dell Precision
WorkStation 410 or 610 configured with the DC1000 video-capture card
from Pinnacle Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:PCLE). This non-linear video
editing solution provides expert and novice digital content creators
the ability to edit and produce MPEG-2 video for broadcast-quality
videotapes, streaming video for the Internet and CD-ROM content with
fully interactive menus. Prices for recommended configurations of Dell
Precision WorkStations with the Pinnacle DC1000 video capture card
start at $4,000(a).
Effective today for U.S. customers, Dell is offering the Intel
Gigabit Ethernet Controller as an option on the Dell Precision
WorkStation 410 and 610, which, when connected to a Dell
PowerVault(tm) Network Attached Storage (NAS) device, will enable file
sharing and video streaming at data transfer rates of up to 1 gigabit
per second -- faster than standard 10/100Base-T connections. Each Dell
NAS is expandable to 1.44 TB (terabytes) and allows for
interoperability between UNIX and Windows NT(R) files.
The starting price for a Dell Precision WorkStation with a Dell
PowerVault NAS is $34,405(b). Additional details can be found at
www.dell.com/workstat/storage.
Also available today, U.S. customers can purchase external
storage devices for their Dell Precision WorkStations. The Dell
PowerVault 201S can hold up to 288 GB(c) of storage, and can be
attached directly to their workstation via an external SCSI RAID
Controller. This solution will benefit customers requiring large
amounts of storage for an individual workstation. The starting price
for a Dell Precision WorkStation with a PowerVault 201S storage
solution is $5,851(d). Additional details can be found at
www.dell.com/workstat/storage.
Dell Precision WorkStations hold the No. 1 position in the U.S.
market for NT workstations for the first quarter of 1999(e). More
information about Dell's Siggraph specials can be found at
www.dell.com/workstat/siggraph.
Dell Precision WorkStations are intended for professional users
who demand exceptional performance in the computer-aided design (CAD),
digital content creation (DCC), geographic information systems (GIS),
computer animation, software development and financial analysis
markets. Dell Precision WorkStations are designed to support
Windows(R) 2000.
Dell entered the storage market in 1998 and offers a range of
storage options in the PowerVault line of products. These options
include the fibre channel-based PowerVault 650F storage subsystem,
which offers customers up to 2.1 TB of data storage in a single rack;
the SCSI-based PowerVault 200S and 201S; the PowerVault tape family
for high volume data backup; and the Dell PowerEdge Expandable RAID
Controller 2 (PERC 2) for devices with SCSI-based storage. Dell most
recently announced PowerVault 700N network attached storage products,
which enable sharing of files across multiple operating systems, and
offer up to 1.5 TB of file storage on a single networked file server.
Additional information on Dell's PowerEdge server and Dell
PowerVault storage products is available at
