Hughes considering Shuttle rescue for Orion 3

SPACE RESCUE: NASA astronauts may get a chance to try another satellite
rescue like the one they accomplished in May 1992. Hughes is studying
whether it can meet NASA's price to rescue Orion 3, an HS-601HP platform
built for Loral Space & Communications that was stranded in a low orbit
when its Delta III upper stage failed to ignite a second time as planned
(DAILY, May 6). From an operational standpoint the rescue probably would be
easier than the dicey Intelsat rescue during STS-49, when three spacesuited
astronauts had to grab the big Intelsat VI (F-3) platform by hand in an
unplanned workaround (DAILY, May 15, 1992). Orion 3 is stable and under
ground control, eliminating the need for a capture bar like the one that
didn't work in 1992. Instead, a Shuttle commander could carefully position
the orbiter where spacewalkers in the cargo bay could hand-grapple it, tie
it down and attach a new kick motor designed to boost it to its proper
geostationary orbit.
